Drag diva Titney Queers has succeeded in becoming the new Alternative
Miss Limerick 2001. The competition consisted of three sections and Titney wowed the audience with schoolgirl day wear in the style of Britney Spears. This was followed designer swim wear crafted from bubble wrap and accessorised with a swimming ring with detachable rubber ducks, the outfit was topped off with a lavish yellow floppy hat. But it was her sassy and outrageous evening wear performance that won her the crown. In a 10 minute show biz spectacular Titney performed to a collage of Madonna classics with seamless costume changes and the fervour that has become her trade mark.
Although currently living in Galway, the city’s new ambassador has
promised that she will be visiting Limerick regularly and will do her utmost to make the city proud.
“Winning the Alternative Miss Limerick has been a great honour and the city will certainly be seeing a lot more of me from now on,” said Titney. “My fantasies and ambitions were one- to win the AML 2001 and follow in the flamboyant style of Miss Lillet Shannon Banks- now it has happened and I am looking forward to returning to Galway to gloat,” she continued Titney Queers claims to have a natural liking for spotlight, and a dislike for corduroy and flannel.
Her ambition is to cleanse, tone and moisturise on a global scale, to become the ultimate pop tartlet and to promote a universal sense of taste and flare for alternative types. She took home with her £200 in cash, dinner for two in the Mustard Seed in Co Limerick, a hair voucher, CDs and videos, and membership to various night clubs countrywide.
Runner up was Limerick lass Leslie B Anne, the reigning Miss Cosmo
likes- men, sex, sex and drink, she hate women and minerals. Leslie swung the judges in her favour with performance of Lady Marmalade from Moulin Rouge.
On the judging panel were Declan Buckley (Shirley Temple Bar), Catriona Tierney (Live 95 FM), Laurent Terris (Gay Community News) and a member of the Gay Switchboard in Limerick. Strengthening Limericks ties with the Alternative Miss Ireland, the gracious
hostess for the evening was the beloved Miss Panti. Panti guided the
contestants through the event with her usual humour, glamour and
professionalism. She was joined on stage top drag queen Vada Beaux
Reves for an intriguing performance of the Diana Ross song Touch Me in the Morning.
Other highlights included Vera Von Tramp from Cork and her operatic
rendition of Alleluia, Barbara Dior singing All Kinds of Everything
first timer Cherise doing Strong Enough by Cher.
The Alternative Miss Limerick was run in conjunction with Yum Yum which runs every Friday and Saturday in the basement of the Glentworth Hotel in Limerick.
