Devout
Launch Night
Devout’,
Galway’s newest and most chic Gay and
Lesbian nightclub opened its doors on Friday, 19th
October. Legendary drag queen, Panti of H.A.M. fame hosted the opening night party along with Hugh
Scully (Kitchen, The POD, and Creamfields) guest DJ for the night. What makes ‘Devout’
so different is the emphasis on live performance as well
as great dance music. Exotic dance duet ‘Flesh’
performed on the opening night while Champagne and Tiger Beer
were the preferred brew.
The party was in full swing when Panti
and Kevin Downey (DEVOUT promoter) cut the red ribbon launching
the weekly Friday night venue. The turnout of over 500 clubbers,
made up of not just local Galwegians but others from nearby
counties Clare, Mayo and Limerick as well as those who arrived
from Dublin. All were delighted at DEVOUTs’ arrival and were
given the red carpet treatment on arrival.
Following
the huge success of Galway Pride 2001 and after a long wait for
something new and innovative ‘Devout’, based in Bogart’s Nightclub, Salthill, Galway,
will run every Friday night. It will cater for the gay/lesbian
communities of the West of Ireland as well as being open to all
visiting friends. ‘Devout’
also has a straight-friendly policy.
Well
known personalities who partied the night away were Seán Ó
Tarpaigh (Ros an Rún) TG4,
several members of Macnas, Séamus Hosey (RTÉ)
and Decklan Buckley aka Shirley
Temple Bar, as well as other drag queen personalities
and characters in costume who arrived in chauffeur driven
limousine.
This
new entertainment venue, is one of many projects that Galway
born, Kevin Downey is currently working on. Having toured
worldwide as Stage Manager with the Riverdance
Troupe, Kevin now runs his own event management company, Súgrú
Productions Teo.
‘Having
researched this market, it is clear that Galway is now ready for
this genre of specialised nightclub, no other venue in the west
caters for the gay/lesbian community. Having seen the numbers
who turned up and entered into the fun on Friday night, I am
confident that ‘DEVOUT’
will continue to be a great success’ said Mr. Downey. ‘There
is an exciting line up in the coming weeks as we rotate DJs and
performers in the hope to keep Devout fresh. The DEVOUT
Halloween Party happens on November 2nd, and the
following week a foam party will take place with shorts and
shades being the required garb for the night. We intend to have
something different every week, so no two nights will be the
same.’
‘Bogart’s our venue,
will easily accommodate up to 500 clubbers and with the latest
in lighting technology, video screens, dance podiums, two bars
and what is said to be one of the best sound systems in the
West, patrons will experience a good night’, he concluded.
