Johnny night @ the George Friday 29 June 2001
The foundation to this night out, was laid on the
gay-Ireland.com mailing list (http://gayireland.listbot.com) a good few months
ago. Conor Coughlan – one of the main people behind the Johnny project looked
for ideas/submissions from the gay community as to who they would like to see
perform/act on the night, so if there any complaints about last Friday night
then we ourselves are to blame because what was organised, was a well run and
practically faultless show..

Typical of Conor and his work area, he appointed Project
managers! to oversee events. I arrived at the George at nine thirty to get some
surprising grief at the door, I eventually got past the boys with the
walkie-walkies and purchased a few tickets for the prize draw from a stall just
inside the door. Tickets were priced at ten for £5 or £1 each.. (more on the
prizes down below)
ATTENTION, ATTENTION, George management.. The show started at
9.45 yah!! No waiting around at all. The show was hosted by the one and only
Rentecca, who suffered a minor calamity of forgetting her shoes—so she was
only six foot eleven tall on the nite, she coped well and did the show in her
stockings!
One act flowed into another, so nobody was left hanging around
waiting. I did like the Boy Band ‘In Focus’, themselves and their singing.
Certainly a coup to get them on stage and it wasn’t for one number either.
Pity they didn’t put their white shirts inside their jeans so we all could see
what kind of lunch boxes they had!!
The draw for the raffle took place before midnight, a question
I asked on entry, cos if it was to be held at the end of the show, me not being
paid well by the Delmonte Corporation I wasn’t going to buy any tickets if
that was the case. As it was - the person that won the first prize wasn’t
there or didn’t want to claim it. The prizes? Yes they were ok, especially the
original painting, not so sure about the vacuum pump won by the South African
guy. Having lived in S.A, I always found them very well hung anyway !!

The disco floor was opened up and was soon filled. Didn’t
recognise the Dj… was he brought in for the night? Two more acts were to
follow after that. I felt drained energy wise as the first one took place -
Hannah Jones, sang her heart out to the crowd. She has appeared before at the
Gorge. Later on Tina Cousins entertained the crowd so after Hannah I decided to
call it a night and headed off into the warm sultry air.
Well done to all concerned
Btw. Despite being a Johnny night out, up to the point when I
left, I didn’t see any condom packs available. I know Mick Quinlan announced
it from the stage that "Ye would all be getting one" but I hope my
friend who was asking about them, got one cos he was pretty well "on
it" and randy at the same time!
The Man from Delmonte says "Well done, Johnny crew"
