After
the Hallowe’en nightmare (you can read about it by clicking
here), my
friends and I decided to give The George another go. The plan was to
go on a mini-pub crawl after work.
First
up was Viva on South William Street. I really like the
downstairs — it’s a bit like an upper class brothel with the dark
red walls and the black leather sofas. Unfortunately it wasn’t open
so we had to put up with the stale surroundings of the ground floor.
The place was quiet on the Thursday evening Martin, Colm and I went
but there were a few ‘scene’ faces around the place. Has anyone
else noticed that there is always a funny smell in the downstairs
men’s toilets in Viva? I have an uncomfortable feeling that when the
builders were putting the finishes touches to the place, they may have
forgotten about a ham sandwich and sealed it up — forever to be
smelt decaying by all the pretty Viva boys while they spend a penny.

After
something to eat in the Irish Film Centre, the three of us headed
over to The George. Martin had trainers on but that didn’t seem to
be a problem as we got in with no questions asked. Maybe they are
getting lax on their door policy regarding sports wear – who knows?
Anyhow,
the Gee was nicely full and I am slightly embarrassed to write that I
drank seven pints altogether. (Well, I was thirsty!) Had a good night
out (seven pints really oil the joints) and have forgiven the Gee for
our refused entry the previous Saturday — for God’s sake, once
upon a time I used to work in that bar! — but as I say, all is
forgiven.

Something
brilliant has happened. I have discovered that there is a connection
between myself and that Aussie spunk-bucket Russell Crowe!
About
three or four months ago, I received a phone call from a friend of a
friend. The caller’s was Maura who works for a film company in
Ireland. She wanted to know if I knew of any drag queens interested in
doing a bit of TV/film work. Now, because I had written a piece on the
Alternative Miss Ireland contest for Ireland on Sunday, I had mobile
numbers for Shirley Temple-Bar and Vada Bon Rev. I gave Maura these
numbers and didn’t really think much more about it.
Then,
dear readers, what should I read on this very website? Only that Vada
Bon Rev along with Renttecca are to feature in a film being directed
by Jim Sheridan! And who should be in this film but Djimon Hounsou who
was in Gladiator — I’m
getting there… — and who was the star of Gladiator?
Mr spunk-bucket!
More
next week…
