You
have to hand it to the GI gang, they certainly know how to
drum up a bit of publicity. Their advert with the two
footie lads snogging has got Ireland talking. Sitting on
the top deck of the 48A heading through Ranelagh, I
noticed how people were pointing the ad out to each other
— or just staring at it. That was at the start of the
advert’s run. Now that it has been up a few weeks,
I’ve noticed a different reaction. Instead of looking at
the ad, it seems to me that people (especially young men)
are glancing at anything but the ad. I wonder what this is
about? Have people lost interest in it already or are they
worried that if they are caught staring at the ad, then
that must mean they are (God forbid) gay. Oh, I dunno.

On
the one hand, all the publicity is great. On another,
there’s a possibility it may backfire. GI is being aimed at gay and gay-friendly people living in Ireland.
I’d imagine the magazine’s closest rival is Attitude
which has huge sales here. One of the main reasons (apart
from the content) for Attitude’s
large sales is its name. The title ‘Attitude’
doesn’t signify that the magazine is aimed at gay people
(as Gay Times
does). It is easier for 18 year old Seamus in
Ballygobackwards who knows he is gay but hasn’t come out
yet to buy Attitude
than it is to buy Gay
Times. Add to this the fact that shop owners and sales
assistants in small villages and towns tend to know
everyone in the area . . .
All
I’m saying is that after all the publicity, people now
know that GI is a gay magazine and that might make it
harder for young Seamus to go into the shop and buy a
copy. I hope I’m wrong.

I
know a few people involved and I wish them all the best
with the magazine. The launch party is tonight and I
can’t wait. GI have hired the downstairs in The Morrison
and Jameson and some schnapps company are sponsoring the
event so am vee vee excited. My friends and I have been
wondering who the special guests will be. I’m leaning
toward Brian Dowling (I believe he was in The Gee on
Saturday night, so we know he’s in the area) and I’m
really hoping Graham Norton is going to make an appearance.
Haven’t thought about what to wear as yet – it would be
a laugh to go in drag but I just don’t have what it
takes! I’ll leave that side of things to Panti, Vada and
Shirley.
I’ll
report back next week with what happened at the GI launch
– hoping for some juicy gossip!
