Review from Jimmy Walsh Doyle - Spring 2003
My partner and I visited the Inn on the Liffey while on holiday from the States. Two words- don't bother. The price was more than we paid on
the next night for a beautiful room at the Jurys Christchurch, and it was cold
and dark. The beds are on boards, the pillows are paper thin, and the sauna itself is a depressing place. I should think one would want to just stay at a
decent place and tour the saunas later, it would be the same price and you'd
get a decent sleep. The breakfast was also lame, in a freezing cold room.
Yuck. I only hope we didn't get crabs at the sauna, as some of my Irish friends
have there. Live and learn!

This establishment is the very worst kind of Gay hotel, it is badly run, expensive, dirty and trades on unsuspecting gay tourists. It is centrally located on a busy main road and is noisy. The breakfast is a joke, served up when ever the
staff manage to get out of bed and flick ass on your well fried up offering. The food is always smelled before being tossed into the dirty frying pan, left from the previous day, any basic ideas of hand washing or protective clothing do not exist. The sauna is a filthy sleaze pit after which you need a good shower, regretfully that would not be available at one of the rooms upstairs. You have to book in advance with a credit card and the words 'refund' or 'checking' our or 'can I see the manager' do not exist. Shame on you Inn on the Liffey.
I am well travelled and you are in my worst top 5 in the world!!!!!

The guest house has a somewhat 'seedy' feel with an entrance beside a shut down shop front. We stopped for two nights and didn't have any hot or cold water for most of this time. Apart from this the window shutters were falling off, the window catch was broken, the door key took a lot tries to turn the lock, the bathroom light was faulty and there was no tea making facilities!
For the price this seems rather poor and has certainly earned a new name of 'Iffy on the Liffey' !!!
Review from Jim Gough - Nov 2002
Spent a few nights at Inn on the Liffey, Guest House. I needed to have a place where we could unwind with no questions asked. Delighted to have found it at Inn on the Liffey. The rooms have been recently decorated, but are basic. The staff are friendly and helpful and provide a full Irish Breakfast before you set out on your days touring. Close to all amenities and to the Temple Bar area. The steam room and sauna, in the Dock Sauna, located down at ground floor level was thriving with a good mix of all nationalities. Entrance to the Sauna is free for residents which can make it that little bit more value for money, as you can go into the Dock as often as you like, free of charge, when staying at the Inn. I would recommend it as a friendly, but no frills attached Guest House in the heart of the city. Will return sometime.

Hello,
I don't know if you only publish positive reviews or not.
My experience at the Inn on the Liffey was definitely not a positive one.
I stayed there in January and it was very cold. The heating system was broken. The staff was very unhelpful, and it was not possible to speak to a Manager. I have not been offered an electric heater for the time, nor have I been offered any kind of compensation!
The Managers do not respond on letters and faxes and hang up on phonecalls.
Regards
Bernd

I see that things haven't improved at the Inn on the Liffey since June 2000.
The Inn on the Liffey costs the same as a gay suite in San Diego but provides very little by way of comfort. A friend went to San Diego and I went to Dublin. For instance, the room had a shower down the hall that I couldn't use because the water was too hot. The carpet wasn't vacuumed. There was no service between the days I was there (no bed making or fresh towels in the room). The size of the single was about 7 x 8 feet with a skylight for a window, providing a good view of the seagulls, which I appreciated. As such, it was quiet. There was TV cable, but hardly close circuit porn as in San Diego; I don't think that may be allowed in Holy Eire.
It is a friendly place but not worth the money. Is this another example of gays being taken advantage of because of our outlaw status? It might be that this is the case with modern Ireland in general these days. Over priced for the value. I paid $125 for two nights for one person, proportionately a good deal more than what was paid in 2000 by two people.
It had free access to the sauna downstairs. Also down the Quay in the same block, a gay bar called Out on the Liffey was friendly and very convenient.
The breakfast was, on the other hand, delicious with lively conversation with the other guests.
I would not recommend the Inn on the Liffey to anyone. When in Dublin go to a straight hotel and get good service for your money. Then play elsewhere.
Review - Oct 2002 - Daniel Marcus - Paris, France
Apparently one of the positive things about the Inn on the Liffey was that it was inexpensive. This is no longer the case; I was charged 85 euros for a room at the end of September that apparently goes for 100 euros normally. The place was dismal; the entrance was shabby, dark and spooky. The room was not particularly clean, the bathroom had mold and there were just two little bars of soap.
It is centrally located, the guy at reception was friendly and breakfast was offered but I thought the the thing about gay B&Bs was that they offered great value for money with a bit of decor and comfort. Well the Inn on the Liffey misses out on all points. I would recommend that people stay elsewhere.

i can honestly say that this is the worst holiday accomodation i have ever
had the misfortune of enduring. I had booked a double room for a weekend -
at a price higher than advertised anywhere on the web! - and was treated to
some of the worst service imaginable.
Our room did not have any running water for the entirety of the saturday night we were there - we were
promised it would be fixed for the next day yet it wasnt - we were not
given any apology or notice or anything! The manager was nowehre to be found and no one knew who was acting in his place. I decided to secure
other accomodation for the final nights stay and was then told i would not
be given a refund for the night i had paid upfront! furthermore our hotel
room did not even have an internal dorr handle - we had put our fingers under the door and yank hard. A truly horrendous experience and i hope
this warning stops others from having to go through what we did.

we used street parking just outisde the inn for our hire car.
taking our bags to the entrance we found out that we had booked into a place which also had a sauna attached ( for which we had free entrance). we rang the door bell and was buzzed in. the reception area was also the entrance to the sauna. given our keys, we were directed upstairs. found the room and was to be honest shocked... it looked nothing like th epics we had seen before booking. the bed was small, the bedding was not entirely clean ( i slept in my underwear just to make sure), the furniture was ancient, what little there was (looked like it was recovered from a rubbish tip), the TV was a portable with no remote (wasnt really needed due to size of room), no curtains but old wooden shutters, the bathroom was not exactley the cleanest i had seen and toilet paper was scarce, no toiletries so bring your own, towels, not exactley big or that serviceable. the view of the river to the front was great, the road outside very noisy and it was almost impossible to sleep due to heat (it was quite a hot part of the summer) as we had the shutters and the window open. the breaksfast was ok, nothing fantastic, tasty but small. the eating area was quaint if not well maintained.
i would not stay there again.
regards
Steve Houghton
