South West 9

South West 9 - Gay Ireland Movie Review

Directed by Richard Parry

Gay-Ireland.com rating : 5 out of 10

From the same stable as Human Traffic and a not too dissimilar theme, SW9 is set in Brixton, amongst the disco biscuit consuming bunny ravers of multicultural London. Narrated by a not too intrusive Will Johnson - a drugs mule, who wants to get out of the business but is being ever more sucked into its seedy facets, it tells the story of a group of people from the area and some blow in white trash who slum it amongst the Rastafarian culture.
It could be sub titled 24 hours in the life of Brixton but instead focuses mainly on five people.

An enterprising Essex boy and his mate who unknowingly overdoses on some "chemical". He bears an uncanny resemblance to Ronan Keating, especially in his 'spaceman' phase.

A reformed national front Arfur Daley type, who is domineered by his sister.

A local black girl made good who has risen to the top of a shady conglomerate.

The aforementioned Drugs mule.

The slumming it, white girl who goes back to Mummy every two days for comfort and money.

Throw in a few other radicals, a gospel choir and May day protestors and that about sums up the film. Yes there is a story line, there is a connection between all the events, but at times it gets annoying the number of failures in the over all plans to hold a "Faith Rave" in a disused Church - it reminded me of the film Trick - all we wanted was the two guys to have sex!!!

It did gather a bit of body and direction towards the last third, especially with our Ronan Keating friend in control of a gun while counting space men!! Just who did he waste?? For that answer you will have to see the film. A nice ending too from the high flying company girl and her CD She never forgot her roots it seems.
