"I
saw a man kill another human being, well, an
accountant"
so
said Simon Garden (Steve Coogan) the geeky star of the
movie. Indeed it’s playing a geek which shot Steve
Coogan to fame in the guise of Alan Partridge in his BBC.
Set in and around Manchester, events kick off with
Garden under jobs review from his employers following
complaints from fellow workers. Unable to convince that
three out of a thousand non re-offenders was a success
story, he is dispatched to a new job in Manchester.
The
plot revolves around a murder witnessed by Coogan and his
plea of innocence, which falls on deaf ears due to the
accused being a police officer..
The
bulk of the film is devoted to Garden assembling a motley
crew of his ex parole prisoners to rob a safety deposit
box which contains a VCR close circuit recording of the
murder taking place at a Manchester sex club.
The
film is very stop and go, with some very funny moments
like the vomit on the Blackpool roller coaster and the
wasp going up Garden's nose... quite how they actually
filmed/staged that is beyond me but deserves applause.
There is some irritating back ground music which links the
different scenes, which just gets annoying after the first
half hour. Fans of Partridge (and BBC style comedy in
general) will find the whole film one laugh after another.
The movie at times appeared unrealistic with some scenes
benefiting from more thought.
The
sudden appearance of Omar Sharif as the so called deceased
'Victor' was really pushing the boat out in terms of
credulity. His appearance offset the good performance of
Om Puri as George who played the part of an ex serial
bigamist!!
I give it a middle of the road rating of five out of
ten, worth going to see on a wet Monday or Tuesday
afternoon, a good way to stay out of trouble.
