Movie Review :  Girl Fight

A cross between Billy Elliot and Rocky is how I would describe this very enjoyable film. As the name suggests it involves a girl and her passion to be a boxer and take on the male domain and her sometimes underlaying hatred for men.

Set and filmed in New York amongst the hispanic neighbourhood, this english (for a change!)spoken film stars 18 year old Diana( not very spanish name I agree)played by Michelle Rodriguez and her secret training to be a boxer under the watchful eye of Hector (Jaime Tirelli).

After much pleading Diana rips her father off for the money to train in the gym alongside her very good looking brother Tiny, played by Ray Santiago. Tiny has no interest in boxing and is sent to train to get street wise, something Diana is already;on the tough streets of Queens and in her school. Her mother committed suicide some years previous, something she blames her father for and surfaces in a vicious attack on him in the family home.

Diana is an intreaguing actor. She was born in the Dominican republic, lived in Puerto Rico and Texas and the director made good use of close ups of her angry eyes, fiery nostrils and muscular body. And its not padding either.. look at close ups of her legs and arms and u will see what I mean! Her hispanic looks are even attractive in a way and they obviously attracted the attention of fellow male boxer Adrian (Santiago Douglas) with whom she did find something in common... exit lesbian viewers stage left!!

It was to Adrian that she seeked shelter after leaving the family home. Adrian saw turning into a pro boxer as a way out of the area and away from his family. Adrian had his white upper class girlfriend, but it was to Diana that he had some feelings for. Ultimatly they both have to put aside any romantic feelings for each other as they are paired off to fight together in the ring, much to Adrian's coach reluctance. With orders to eliminate her in round one ringing in his ears, he enters the ring. I wont spoil the plot from here. :-) Quote of the film: Diana to her female friend "I got school covered, now I am ready to fuck up the rest of the world" Go and check it out.
