The Charlatans - Wonderland

Review

Well here’s something of a surprise. I had written the charlatans off the map. It seemed they had lost it, pumping up the yawn factor with each album. However with their new release “wonderland”, they successfully shake off the ghosts of madchester, Britpop and the bargain bins of record stores around the world.

Wonderland doesn’t really fit in with any of the charlie’s back catalogue. Its their most radical (and best) change in direction since they reinvented themselves on the over hyped 5th album simply titled “The Charlatans”

The Charlatans - Wonderland review

Lead Singer Tim Burgess has made no secret of his move to Los Angeles, where he lives with his other half (the things we do for love). While the rest of the band still live in the UK it is easy to spot the LA influences, there is a sunny Californication coating on every song. It’s the last feel good record of the summer, oozing with singles, infact it should have been released in June rather than Mid September.

Tim Burgess has never looked better, he peers at us from the front cover wearing designer shades and a leather shirt. His image screams rock and roll. He’s instantly recognisable as a front man of one of the best bands in the UK (or is that LA?) It’ll be interesting to see where they go from here.
