Gormanstown Beach Co. Meath July 1st From 1pm
Thank God for air conditioning in cars!
We certainly needed it on the way to the picnic. Four of us arrived at the beach
shortly after one pm. We had a bit of trouble actually finding the beach but one
quick phone call saved us going round in circles and eventually we found a sign
post to the railway station/beach.
Cars were already parked on the narrow
roadway but persistence by our driver showed that cars were already on the
beach. Determining if they were pink or not was the next question. We bypassed
some cars with pushchairs beside them and I twigged a likely looking dyke on our
right so we went in that direction..
Yes we were right; this was the
beginnings of the queer gathering that was to be our base until the evening…...recognised
our friends and parked up beside them. Actually the gay hiking group had a huge
banner but it was facing the wrong side from the entrance laneway…..soon was
corrected. The sight of boyz rubbing oils and lotions into each other reminded
me of beach #7 at Maspalaomas. Actually despite there being only hazy sun, my
arms got burned so they were wise people!
Michael – he from the gay hiking
group, was well organised and went about setting up the full size volleyball net
and marking out the boundaries on the sand – point of much argument and fun
later on as to the ball being "in" or "out" Soon there was a
game going. The first of many…. 6 on each side with Michael refereeing. Most
ppl attempted to keep the ball from touching the ground, but there were very few
‘slam dunks’ to be proud off… that’s where we differed from the same
game played by Tom Cruise in Top-Gun! The paparazzi (in the form of Gianni) were
there in force snapping action shots.
Meanwhile back at the ranch, the smell
of cooking assailed our nostrils, the BBQ was going and burgers were being
served to all that wanted. Most ppl had their own cool boxes full of
refreshments and goodies. A lost soul went around looking for a corkscrew,
clutching his nicely chilled bottle of plonk. We of course, had our selves
covered and had bought our own small screw top bottles of wine J which we
savoured while looking at Dyke United v’s Dyke Rangers on the volleyball
court!!.. All in good fun. Some ppl had brought along canoes and walked out to
the sea for an afternoon session on the mirror like seas.
People began to drift away around five
thirty, we left after six… some were heading up to a local pub on the main
road, most were going home to get some kip before heading out to Q +A later on
in the evening.
Interesting profile of those that
attended. Majority were over 25 yo. The bunnies presumable having either no
transport or sore heads!!
My thanks to Michael- un-offical
organiser or otherwise, twas a relaxing end to Pride week.
The Man From Delmonte says Thanks
