Review 2 : April 2001
Went
to Tease last night, it brought back plenty of memories of Wonderbar. The
place has been spruced up since those days, so some of the problems
arising from the poor layout of the venue have been mitigated.
There's more chill out areas, (the cloakroom is downstairs now), and the
fittings
in the bar and circulation areas have been upgraded. In the main room,
there is a small bar, and the lighting has been tweeked. And the DJ is on
stage, instead of hidden away on the balcony.

Anyhows, arrived about 11:30, no queue and the crowd inside was still
pretty thin on the ground. There was a large tv screen behind the stage,
showing some kind of old 'Village People live' video...hardly a good
choice, give us Bob the Builder, the Teletubbies, anything but the VP!!
Within an hour the place had filled nicely, good mix of ages, but skewed
towards the younger crowd. Eddie and his dancers helped build the
atomosphere by strutting their stuff on stage, then it was time for the
main acts. New Entry were on first, kicking off with a gutsy rendition of
'I want it all, I want it now'. I'd guess some of the crowd were
thinking, yiz might have to wait a while, lads. They looked confident and
competant
enough, but didn't really win over the crowd. Later 'Eden' performed,
with a lead singer (Mark Power of 4Guys and Utopia fame, if I'm not
mistaken),
three backing singers, a guitar and keyboard player, so we couldn't say
we didn't get value for money. Again, they were pleasant and competent
enough, though you couldn't say they generated any great excitement.

New
Entry - On Stage @ Tease |
That said, there's no doubt Tease is a huge improvement on the usual
Saturday night ripoff in the George, where ya pay yer seven or eight
quid..for what? To be give about a square foot of floorspace to stand in
and drink yer 100% marked-up booze. Fair dues to Eddie and Thomas for
giving it a lash and giving us the option of live entertainment.
Unfortunately, I had to leave after the acts so I dunno how the dance set
went after that.
So overall, a great reminder of the heyday of Wonderbar, very enjoyable
and deserving of support. Hopefully Tease will become a regular event.
