Review 1 : April 2001
The
news of a new club opening in a central location on a Saturday was good
news to all. Dublin has been starved of decent Saturday entertainment for
some time and I was more than willing to roll out a red carpet for its
arrival. Now theres nothing wrong with the George, don’t get me wrong
but spending 52 Saturdays a year in the one venue can do little for
one’s sanity.

New
bar @ Tease |
So
my Saturday night began downstairs in GUBU – hadn’t planned on going
clubbing until after twelve but the extremely loud music helped change my
mind and I hit the road around 11. Was surprised to find a large queue
outside the venue, it’s quiet trendy to have a queue outside a club
these days. Cross Reference : Zanzibar, Fireworks, The Kitchen.
ID
was requested from everyone
at the door and a gentle reminder was given as to the goings on of the
club, so as not to scare any straight lads who might have ventured in by
mistake. Entry fee was a whopping £9.00 – altho’ this was made
slightly cheaper with an online flyer from Gay-Ireland.com
Things
have changed slightly since the Wonderbar days, there are a lot more
seats, which is a good thing now that I’ve aged three years since last
visiting a club here. Everything else is more or less similar –
altho’ the cloakroom has moved downstairs, which may need some
rethinking. This is where complaint number one comes in (although bear in
mind I was a little tipsy and didn’t complain – just grumbled
slightly to myself). The queue for the coatroom was huge – too large to
count but normally these queues have a habit of being fairly swift so I
took my place at the end. 15 minutes later I hadn’t moved (except a
quick dash to the bathroom while a stand-in kept my place)
I lost count of how long I actually stood in line – but didn’t
dwell on it too much because I then had to face the queue at the bar.
The
venue is host to three bars, tho each one had a steady queue all night.
All I wanted was one pint of Budweiser and one pint of Bulmers, however I
was unable to get my order after visiting all three bars, everyone of the
bars had run out of one or the other – so to get my Budweiser I queued
at bar number one then to get my Bulmers I had to queue at bar number
two. Altho’ this scenario saved me getting into rounds – saving me a
few pence at the end of the night.

Eddie
+ Tease Dancers |
Infairness
to the organisers – they can do little about the running of the bar or
the speed of the cloakroom, they put a lot of work into the night itself
and it really showed. Their logo tastefully decorated the venue, from a
projection on a wide screen behind the stage to dancers and staff members
wearing ‘Tease’ t-shirts.
The
online flyers boasted, ‘A whole new kind of club’, which in a way can
be debated as many have been comparing the club to ‘Wonderbar’, which
ran in the same venue for several years and still lies close to
people’s hearts. The comparison is by no means a bad thing – infact I
would call it flattery.
Eddie
McGuinness was the host of both clubs, having a host gives a club a more
personal touch. Eddie opened the night with some energetic dancing, he
was accompanied by 4 dancers who obviously put a lot of work into their
routines. It was entertaining to watch, because this venue is so big, it
is definitely necessary to have dancers on stage.
The
second act was boy band ‘New Entry’ – The band didn’t capture the
audience as well as they should have and crowd participation was kept to
a minimum, that said there were numerous fans taking up the first two
rows loving every minute of it.

Eden
on stage @ Flirt |
Third
and final act of the night ‘Eden’, were more of a crowd pleaser, lead
singer mark has an amazing voice, and has the looks and charisma to
match. The two member band ran thru some of their own songs before
launching into an 80’s medley comprising of A-HA, the Bee Gee’s
and other tunes that can be found on the ‘now that’s what I
call music 12’ album.
DJ
Stephen from the George on Sunday’s finished off the night with some
modern dance tunes which had the dance floor hoping until the venue
started to clear out around three.
I’m
sure the promoters are pleased with the success of the first night, I
imagine they are already planning
‘Tease part 2’, I
imagine I would return to Tease again altho’ this will depend on the
act, which will need to be strong, a Wonderbar style template will need
to be adopted, light cabaret style acts, singers, comedians, etc.. will
need to be on the bill in order to keep people coming back, otherwise
it’ll just turn into another place to go on a Saturday night – same
music, same surroundings, same cloakroom queues.
