Double standards and unexpected cross gender love making pull together this most unusual play. I suppose I better start by explaining the Yiddish word 'Kvetch'. Kvetch is or are the thoughts that go through ones mind, in every day situations. In reality, they are probably a true statement of the way we feel about other people and things in situations that cause us stress and high anxiety. Politeness and conformity hide Kvetch.
So we have a play involving five people, who cant stand each other living in Jewish New York. Still life and acting are direct opposites, but they combine to make this play. The timing was of the essence, as each individual spoke animatedly about his wife/boss and nerdy house guest. It was like a confession box for each player, an interaction and trust that each built up with the audience, which at one stage lead to the actors going out amongst the seating.
The play starts out by Frank inviting his nerdy friend home to a less than pleased wife, who could neither cook, nor play the loving wife. The visiting mother in law who belches and farts her way through the play provides a sounding off board for the 'dagger humour'
"I married the mouth and got the belch"
His wife Donna, who I can only describe as hyper is going through living hell with Frank. Their sex life is non existent. Sexual arousal is arrived at through personal fantasy with George in the case of Donna; and with nerdy Hal in the case of Frank.
The scene of Hal having gay sex with Frank who at the same time trying to please Donna was memorable.
Interspersed were gems of Jewish humour that has a life of its own. I regarded it as a most interesting production
