Once
upon a time, pop stars would sue at the slightest suggestion of a link to
homosexuality. Today, they are upfront about how much they love their gay fans.
The biggest boy band in the UK and Ireland, Boyzone, has an openly gay member, while acts
such as All Saints, Steps, Geri Halliwell & Billie queue up to play at GAY,
a themed-night at London's Astoria.
On
the 8th May, 85,000 people will make their way to Finsbury Park for
the second annual Mardi Gras festival, featuring live performances from the
likes of Steps, Stephen Gately, Bananarama and Marc Almond. A week later, the
Gay Life & Style 2000 exhibition takes place at Olympia. To mark these two
major events, MTV is hosting its first ever Gay Weekend, on July 15 & 16.
The
weekend features two special blocks of themed programming. In Gay Request Live
on Saturday 15 July (repeated the following day), the MTV crew will be down at
the Gay Life & Style Exhibition, chatting to visitors and taking calls from
those unlucky enough not to be able to make the trip down to London to be there
themselves. We’ll have special guests out in full force, and of course,
we’ll be playing all your favourite music live on air!
In
All Time Top 10, we unveil the favourite video choices of the UK’s gay
community, as selected by readers of one of Britain’s top gay magazines. Right
up to Gay Weekend itself, we’ll be asking readers for their favourite tracks
of all time, all in time to reveal that all-important top ten on Saturday night!
Tune into MTV to find out whether our special guest presenter includes your
choice!
Rounding
off Gay Weekend, Edith Bowman hosts a thirty minute special from behind the
scenes at the London Mardi Gras from Finsbury Park. She’ll be chatting to all
the star guest performers, and taking in the colour and atmosphere of the
carnival with excited fans. The event should hold particular fondness for Edith
- her very first assignment for MTV UK back in 1997 was to cover the Gay Pride
event in South London for MTV News!
